social media posts

I have been using social media as a tool for communication since 2011, when I decided to make a Facebook group for the community service club that I founded my freshman year of high school. In that group, I was able to make announcements of important events and dates and keep everyone up to date on the latest club news. I've included some of those early posts are below:

I found posting in the group to be so effective that I have continued using Facebook as a means of communication ever since, especially when working with a younger demographic.

In 2016, as a Residential Counselor at the English Language Center (a summer camp for international kids learning English), I noticed that the students kept missing their bed check announcements because they would retreat to their rooms early. With my supervisor's permission, I created a new Facebook group that I managed singlehandedly. After each full day of camp, I drafted announcements that would be accessible to English learners, and I even made silly little graphics to accompany them (examples below).

The group was a success, and ELC continued to use it even after I no longer worked there.

Even though a great deal of important communication happens over email and phone, the world is rapidly evolving to rely more on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok. For the past decade, I have been on four separate social media teams and have used it to invite people to events, take polls, and monitor engagement, both for my own personal groups (see Real Adult Humans post below) and as a representative for many others (see UC Berkeley Study Abroad Office post below).

When used effectively, I think social media can be a powerful way for companies and communities to connect, both internally and externally.
